Breathwork
What is Breathwork?
Breathwork encompasses a variety of breathing exercises and techniques designed to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By intentionally controlling breath patterns, breathwork helps reduce stress, increase energy levels, and enhance overall health. Techniques range from deep diaphragmatic breathing to rhythmic breathing and can be tailored to individual needs. Benefits include reduced anxiety, improved focus, better sleep, and enhanced cardiovascular and respiratory function. Additionally, breathwork promotes relaxation, boosts immune response, and supports emotional healing. Our guided breathwork sessions provide the tools and techniques to harness the power of your breath, leading to a more balanced, vibrant, and healthy life.
What is a Breathing Pattern Dysfunction?
Breathing Pattern Dysfunction (BPD) refers to irregular or inefficient breathing habits that can negatively impact health and well-being. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest tightness, fatigue, and anxiety. These dysfunctional patterns often result from stress, poor posture, or chronic respiratory conditions, leading to shallow, rapid, or erratic breathing. Left unaddressed, BPD can exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular issues, reduce oxygen delivery to tissues, and impair overall physical and mental performance. Our specialized therapy and training programs aim to correct these patterns, promoting proper diaphragmatic breathing techniques to restore optimal respiratory function, enhance relaxation, and improve overall health. Before anyone undertakes breathwork exercises/techniques it is very important to first have a good breathing pattern. Poor breathing mechanics when doing any type of breathwork can actually make your breathing pattern dysfunction worse. This can create a list of symptoms that are typically attributed to other causes.
Common Symptoms are:
- Neck pain/tightness
- Lightheadedness/Dizziness
- Anxiety
- Shortness of breath
- Frequent sighing or yawning
- Feeling that you can’t take a full breath in or the air doesn’t feel like it goes all the way out
- Breathing requires work
- Getting easily out of breath in proportion to your fitness
Once you’ve established a good breathing pattern, breathwork practices can be a phenomenal add-on in your life. For example, alternate nostril breathing can help promote balance in the nervous system, while coherence breathing is extremely relaxing and may help improve heart rate variability.
As mentioned, there are many different breathing techniques with a wide range of potential benefits. Dr. Chris Pepitone at AdaptiveRx is trained in multiple evidence-informed breathing and performance methods and has spent countless hours studying various pranayama techniques. He can help correct, teach, and put together a plan that best suits your respiratory and health needs.
